Rally Decries State Schools’ Math Failings, Seattle PI.
WTM members spoke to many legislators and were encouraged by their desire to solve WA’s math problems. Many math and science bills are currently being discussed in the Senate and House Education Committees. WTM is working hard to make sure our goals are progressing through the legislature. We will keep you posted on the developments.

R. James Milgram Ph.D rewrote the California Mathematics Standards for the California State Board of Education with colleagues at Stanford. With UC Berkeley Professor H. H. Wu, he helped write the California Mathematics Framework. He is a member of the National Board for Education Science and the NASA Advisory Council. He is also a Mathematics reviewer for the new NCTM Mathematics Guidelines.
Professor Milgram has taught mathematics at Stanford University since 1969. He became interested in problems with K - 12 mathematics education in this country primarily due to his experience at the University of New Mexico. There he first came into contact with otherwise bright and hard working students severely handicapped by weak K - 12 mathematics educations. When he returned to Stanford he found that even the students at Stanford appeared to have somewhat diminished skills in mathematics when compared to their counterparts 15 - 20 years ago.
Dr. Milgram received his B.Sc., M.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1961, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 1964. He taught at Princeton University and the University of Illinois at Chicago in the 1960’s, before coming to Stanford. Dr. Milgram has given numerous plenary lectures at national and international conferences in mathematics and science as well as colloquiums at most of the major universities on this continent and Europe . He held the Gauss Professorship at U. of Göttingen and the Ordway Visiting Professorship at University of Minnesota , and he visited the University of New Mexico for several years as Regents’ Professor in the early 1990’s.

David Klein Ph.D is the lead author of "The State of State Math Standards 2005," published by the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation. The Fordham report rated Washington standards as F, among the worst in the nation .
Dr. Klein has testified about mathematics education in forums ranging from local school boards to a subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives and has served on official panels to review K-8 mathematics curriculum submissions for statewide adoption in California . In 1999 he was appointed by the California State Board of Education to review and evaluate professional development proposals for California mathematics teachers. From 1999 to 2000, he served as Mathematics Content Director for the Los Angeles County Office of Education where he directed and assisted math specialists. From 2001 to 2002, Klein developed teacher education materials for each of the grades K-5, and a syllabus for university level teacher education courses for the Core Knowledge Foundation in Charlotttesville , Virginia .
Professor Klein teaches mathematics at California State University, Northridge. He received a B.A. in mathematics and a B.S. in physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara , and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University . He has held teaching and research positions at Louisiana State University , UCLA, USC, and now at Cal State , Northridge. He has published research papers in mathematical physics and probability theory as well as articles about K-12 education. His university web site includes some of his other articles.
