Supt. Kimball’s slides: Developing Mathematical Proficiency for All Students

A petition has been put together, thanking our incoming Superintendent for making math and science his top priority issue. It asks him and the school board to dust off and use the old textbooks that include example-based instruction while working to adopt new math curriculum in the district.

We have a new chairwoman for WTM -LWSD who has started an email chat group called WheresTheMath-lwsd. She will be setting up monthly meetings to move our agenda forward. On June 4th, we will be presenting our petition with signatures (more than 200 so far) at our district board meeting. All WTM members are invited to attend. Our school district offices are in Redmond Town Center.

We had a “Math Education Forum” on May 18 in Richland, with Sharon Hanek as our guest speaker. Our first hour of the event was devoted to parents and what they can do, and the second hour was on the new laws and how they will affect education. Total attendance was about 60. We had a large assortment of handouts for people to take, documents for viewing, and materials on display such as Singapore Math books, reform math books, the Flashmaster, and MJ’s video playing on a laptop. The event was good for meeting new concerned parents and teachers, as well as school board members. Representative Larry Haler and Senator Jerome Delvin both attended. I met several parents who are interested in learning more about what they can do to get the curriculum changed.

I plan to organize future local meetings, and will continue sending out local email updates. Richland’s math adoption has been slowed down, pending more specific outcomes from the new legislation and SBE determinations. However, I believe the district wants to cram piloting in the spring. Not much time to pilot.

The Seattle group of Where’s The Math is having a community get-together.

Collect your best friends and favorite math textbooks and come to Greenwood Public Library conference room on Saturday, May 26th.

Meeting planned from 10:00 - noon, and the room is reserved until 1:30 for post-meeting socializing and discussions. Munchies will be available, and you are welcome to bring something yummy, either healthy or not.

RSVP to seattle@wheresthemath.com

Agenda will include:

  1. WTM Seattle - welcome to new attendees, and overview to the group’s mission.
  2. Opportunity for new folks to “tell their stories”.
  3. Seattle math adoption. Discuss current status and plan of action.
  4. Update on state-level activites for mathematics.
  5. Getting a WTM foot in the door with our incoming Superintendent, Maria Goodloe-Johnson as a math
    advocacy group.
  6. Provide resources and ideas for parents to spread sensibility in their schools and PTA’s.

Seattle math adoption

There will be the final board vote 4 days after this meeting, so it will be our last chance to comment at a board public testimony. We will set some guidelines to take back to schools to ensure that Singapore is getting used, TERC is NOT getting used, and that math coaches are doing effective work for the students and teachers. We want to schedule a WTM group meeting with our incoming superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson soon after her arrival and offer our group’s support for EFFECTIVE math programs. We want to work for open invitation to PTA’s to have WTM expert(s) give presentation at PTA board or general meetings.
